Why DNA sexing

The safe way to determine your bird's sex.

01

Non-invasive

No anaesthetic and no surgery — just a small sample you collect yourself.

02

Any age, any season

Works for birds of any age and at any time of the year.

03

No stress

Your bird stays at home — there is no transport or handling stress.

04

Reliable

A proven method, with every result double-checked against our database.

How it works

From sample to result in four steps.

Sex is determined from the sex chromosomes: males carry two identical Z chromosomes (ZZ) and females a Z and a W (ZW). In the analysis a male shows a single DNA band and a female shows two — compared against STAB VIDA's database of known species and sexes.

01

Collect the sample

A few growing feathers, a drop of blood, or an eggshell.

02

Send it to the lab

In a sterile bag or tube, together with the order form.

03

DNA analysis

We extract the DNA and read the Z/W sex chromosomes.

04

Get your result

A clear male/female result in 2–3 working days.

Which sample can you send?

02

Blood

3–5 drops from a nail prick, or ~0.1 ml on filter paper or in an alcohol tube.

03

Eggshell

The whole shell, collected within 24 hours of hatching, in an alcohol tube.
